Word Sudoku (Qudoku!) Puzzle for Sunday, 3/15/2009

Caesar was assassinated in 44 BC on this day, the ides of March, after declaring himself dictator for life of Rome. So today I’m skipping the usual Sunday Challenge 12x12 Hidden Word Sudoku puzzle to challenge you with a Qudoku© puzzle set remembering this day in history. But to begin, I’ll first test your knowledge of what “ides” means…with an 8x8 Hidden Word Sudoku puzzle.

NO FLAT? HM…

Each row, column and 2x4 rectangle contains the letters in the word or phrase exactly once
The hidden word or phrase is spelled across, in the shaded cells

From what I remember (not much!) of my roman history, Caesar summoned the Roman Senate to meet in the Theatre of Pompey on the ides of March. A soothsayer had warned Caesar to be on his guard on this day in March the Romans call the ides; when the day came Caesar, on his way to the senate, greeted the seer with a jest: "The ides of March has come!" The seer reportedly replied: "Aye, Caesar, but not gone."

The following Qudoku puzzle uses two 9x9 Word Sudoku puzzles to supply the letters you’ll need to fill out a famous quote from Caesar and other Romans on this day. Beware!
