Extra Word Sudoku (Qudoku) Puzzle for Monday, 3/28/2011

On the 28th of each month, I’ll challenge you to uncover quotes from famous people. Today’s first quote comes from a football player; the second quote comes from a writer who lived in the time of Charles Darwin.

I was moved by Yahoo Sports writer Les Carpenter’s article last year about Dante Stallworth’s return to football after serving time for second-degree felony manslaughter (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=lc-stallworthsecondchance081210). Carpenter explains that Stallworth was allegedly driving drunk just before dawn in March, 2009 when he hit a man running across the highway. Stallworth had several possible defenses, but chose the felony plea bargain to spare the victim’s family. The 29-year old football player makes one of those obvious-yet-profound statements many of us couldn’t have uttered until we were long past Stallworth’s age.

New Word Sudoku (Swifty Sudoku!) Puzzles for Saturday, 3/26/2011

My pencil is dull," said Tom pointlessly.
A Tom Swifty is an adverbial pun that simultaneously describes a speaker and refers to the speaker's statement. The name comes from the Tom Swift book series for young readers. The authors were roundly criticized for overusing adverbs and descriptive phrases, so that Tom hardly ever said "said" and rarely said anything without a qualifying adverb. A Tom Swifty pun is a parody of this style that will make you groan out loud.
