New Word Sudoku (Swifty Sudoku!) Puzzles for Saturday, 8/31/2013

Parsley, sage, rosemary," said Tom timelessly.
A Tom Swifty is an adverbial pun that simultaneously describes a speaker and refers to the speaker's statement. The name comes from the Tom Swift book series for young readers. The authors were roundly criticized for overusing adverbs and descriptive phrases, so that Tom rarely said anything without a qualifying adverb. A Tom Swifty pun is a parody of this style that will make you groan out loud.

Extra Word Sudoku (Qudoku!) Puzzles for Sunday, 8/25/2013

What killed me kills one man per hour in Britain. That's even more than my wife's cooking.
—Bob Monkhouse, OBE

Actor John Stamos celebrated his 50th birthday this month, which might have been the reason he was quoted repeating a witticism about age this past week. Before I explain what this has to do with the odd quote above, solve this extra Word Sudoku puzzle set to discover Stamos’ thoughts now that he’s “on the downside of 100.”

I looked up who’s credited with authoring the line Stamos repeated and I found the Internet is of two opinions. It’s often attributed to baseball player Chili Davis, but probably came first from British comedian Bob Monkhouse, OBE. Monkhouse was born more than 30 years before Davis. Monkhouse was 75 when he died in 2003 of prostate cancer. The stand-up artist had some great lines; here’s another one.

SINGLY

As I mentioned, Monkhouse died in 2003. But he appeared in a public service announcement on British TV in 2007 for the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation. Computer animation placed Monkhouse next to a grave talking about prostate cancer, interspersed with his patented humorous asides. (That’s where I got the quote that opened this post.) Watch the 40-second ad on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quxOMX1jl1w.

His last line: “As a comedian, I've died many deaths. Prostate cancer, I don't recommend. I'd have paid good money to stay out of here. What's it worth to you?” Then he walks into the distance and disappears.

Even when other comedians (Chili Davis, John Stamos) repeat their lines, comedians always get the last word.

Puzzle solutions in the morning.
