The central, dark image shows the total eclipse March 9, 2016, with the central pupil created by the Sun covered by a dark Moon. Faint structures in the Sun’s corona extend outwards from this disk with the corona imaged in white light. These structures were aligned with the false-colored observations of the Sun from NASA and ESA’s space-based, Sun-orbiting, Solar and Heliospheric Observatory SOHO. The disk is blocked artificially to see the extended corona.

Today’s the day! I can’t wait. Please be safe on the roads if you’re viewing the eclipse away from home; don’t try to head back home right after the eclipse. Emergency response professionals fear that hundreds of thousands of people are going to do that. If you do, you could be sitting for a very long time in a cosmic traffic jam.
Wear your eclipse glasses throughout the eclipse while the sun is still visible! The only time you can look straight at this spectacle is for the few moments of actual totality. The rest of the time, you must wear eye protection. Sunglasses and welder’s glass are not sufficient protection: Wear only certified eclipse glasses.
The past few days, I’ve presented you some extra Hidden Word Sudoku puzzles spelling out synonyms of ECLIPSE or words related to it. Today’s extra puzzles help you identify which planets and stars you’ll be able to see for about two minutes in the middle of the day, when the eclipse has reached totality.
