A Tom Swifty is an adverbial pun that simultaneously describes a speaker and refers to the speaker's statement. The name comes from the Tom Swift book series for young readers. The authors were roundly criticized for overusing adverbs and descriptive phrases, so that Tom hardly ever said "said" and rarely said anything without a qualifying adverb. A Tom Swifty pun is a parody of this style that will make you groan out loud.

New Word Sudoku (Qudoku!) Puzzle for Sunday, 6/7/2009

I came across a small book earlier this year that immediately caught my attention: "instant karma: 8,879 ways to give yourself and others good fortune right now" by Dr. Barbara Ann Kipfer. You may have heard of her because of her bestselling "14,000 Things to be Happy About" or any of more than two dozen other books she’s written. She holds PhD’s in linguistics and archaeology, as well as a master’s degree in Buddhist studies; and she’s also Chief Lexicographer for http://www.dictionary.com/ and http://www.thesaurus.com/.

"instant karma" is one of those small-format books, about 4" square. It’s published by Workman Publishing. It’s full of one-liners to create good karma. Just what each of us needs…we could all use a constant dose of good karma! I was inspired to create a Karmic Qudoku puzzle set for you to solve.
