New Word Sudoku (Swifty Sudoku!) Puzzles for Saturday, 5/30/2020

"Oh goody! Another blackout!" said Tom delightedly.

A Tom Swifty is an adverbial pun simultaneously describing the speaker and the speaker's statement. The name comes from the Tom Swift book series for young readers. The authors were roundly criticized for overusing adverbs and descriptive phrases, so that Tom rarely said anything without a qualifying adverb. (The fact that they did this on purpose, to make the books laugh-out-loud funny to read, didn't blunt the criticism.) A Tom Swifty pun is a parody of this style—no longer related to Tom at all—that will make you groan out loud.

The last Saturday of the month earns you a harder Swifty, by virtue of the number of puzzles!

Extra (Words within) Word Sudoku Puzzles for Tuesday, 5/26/2020: "BRAT NOISE"

Here's another installment of extra "Word within Word" Sudoku puzzles to give you something to take your mind off everything else for a short while.

This week's extra puzzles are based on the nine letters in the anagram BRAT NOISE. Each of the first 16 Word Sudoku puzzles uses eight of the anagram's nine letters and is labeled with the letter to OMIT; each of the last four puzzles uses all nine letters, forming different one-word anagrams. Two of the nine-letter words are common words; two are not.

In each puzzle, the hidden word spells down the shaded diagonal. And as always, the one rule is:

Each row, column, 2x4 rectangle (or 3x3 square) contains each of the letters

You can print this page and solve the puzzles with your pen or pencil. Or you canclick on the label below each puzzle and solve it online interactively. Please let me know your suggestions for how you'd like to interact with the puzzle and its layout (comment on the blog).
