The authors were roundly criticized for overusing adverbs and descriptive phrases, so that Tom rarely said anything without a qualifying adverb. (The fact that they did this on purpose, to make the books laugh-out-loud funny to read, didn't blunt the criticism.) A Tom Swifty pun is a parody of this style—no longer related to Tom at all—that will make you groan out loud.
