On December 7, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked the American Army and Navy base in Pearl Harbor, killing more than 2,000 and injuring at least 1,000 more. My history classes explained that the Japanese strike was calculated to keep America out of World War II; the next day the U.S declared war on Japan. And the next day after that, The Oregonian, the newspaper in my home of Portland, Oregon, first published the phrase that still resounds to this day: “Remember Pearl Harbor.”

Today isn’t a federal holiday, but Americans are encouraged to display the flag at half-staff.
