King became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, for leading non-violent resistance to end racial prejudice in America.
King was assassinated in April 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee, the day after he gave his famous "I've been to the mountaintop" speech, in which he acknowledged he knew he was a target, but that he wasn't afraid. What a powerful statement he made that day!
But at his funeral, mourners heard a replay of a different speech, one from February 4, 1968. King's "Drum Major Instinct" sermon was an adaptation of a 1952 homily ‘‘Drum-Major Instincts’’ by Methodist preacher J. Wallace Hamilton. In this sermon, King encouraged his congregation to seek greatness, but to do so through service and love. And King concluded ... by imagining his own funeral.
… every now and then I ask myself, "What is it that I would want said?"…
