Anna Jarvis of Grafton, West Virginia created the modern Mother's Day holiday as a day to honor mothers and motherhood. Wikipedia tells us that the day is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, some of which have a much older tradition than the modern holiday.
The holiday eventually became so commercialized that many, including founder Jarvis, considered it a "Hallmark Holiday!" Jarvis eventually ended up opposing the holiday she had helped create.
Today we honor her original meaning of this day—remembering Moms everywhere.
