New Word Sudoku Puzzles (Qudoku!) for Saturday, 3/7/2009

Daylight Saving Time, the convention of advancing clocks so that afternoons have more daylight and mornings have less, begins tomorrow morning at two a.m. That’s the time that I’ve scheduled automatic publication of the solutions to today’s Word Sudoku puzzles. So in how many hours will the solutions appear? The apparent difficulty of answering such questions, especially when the begin- and end-dates keep changing, has kept DST (or summertime, as they call it in the U.K.) controversial throughout its history.

Benjamin Franklin is credited with first suggesting Daylight Saving Time in 1784. But it didn’t really catch on until World War I. During DST, the sun rises one hour later in the morning, according to the reset clock, and sets one hour later in the evening. The U.S. government claims it saves energy. There are a lot of doubters. Wikipedia has a great map showing which countries follow the convention. And TimeandDate.com has a nice explanation of DST.

I celebrate the time change by offering you two Qudoku puzzle sets, each based on three 6x6 Word Sudoku puzzles. The first puzzle set spells out a quote by Congressman Edward Markey (D-MA), as quoted in the Associated Press in the summer of 2005.

Solutions to 3/1/2009 Extra Word Sudoku Puzzles

Yesterday’s extra “Karmic Qudoku” puzzle set was based on a karmic saying found in the wonderful little book “instant karma: 8,879 ways to give yourself and others good fortune right now” by Dr. Barbara Ann Kipfer (www.thingstobehappyabout.com/); the particular choice of saying was highly influenced by Thomas Friedman’s book “Hot, Flat, and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution—And How It Can Renew America” (www.thomaslfriedman.com/bookshelf/hot-flat-and-crowded), although I'm not for even one moment implying that the karmic saying sums even part of Mr. Friedman's work!

Extra Word Sudoku (Karmic Qudoku!) Puzzle for Sunday, 3/1/2009

Extra Word Sudoku (Karmic Qudoku!) Puzzle for Sunday, 3/1/2009

Today’s extra Qudoku puzzle set comes from my further reading a little book with big content: “instant karma: 8,879 ways to give yourself and others good fortune right now” by Dr. Barbara Ann Kipfer. I first used one of Dr. Kipfer’s karmic sayings in a puzzle exactly one month ago, on 2/1/2009, and stated then that I might do it monthly. Well, here it is, a month later, and I’ve been listening to the audiobook of Thomas Friedman’s “Hot, Flat, and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution—And How It Can Renew America.” Friedman is a Pulitzer-Prize winning author and journalist who contributes op-ed pieces to The New York Times. He will make a speech in my home town of Portland, Oregon Monday 3/9. When you’re skimming through “instant karma” and you’re listening to “Hot, Flat and Crowded,” certain karmic sayings tend to stand out!

Note the ‘gimme’ in the puzzles: One letter is numbered both 3 and 13 in the quote grid. If you figure out that letter in one Word Sudoku puzzle, it will help you with the other puzzle also using that letter. And a quick examination of the anagrams should tell you what letter that is!
