New (Diagonal!) Word Sudoku Puzzle for Tuesday, 6/10/2008

Today's Word Sudoku puzzle, POLYHEDRA, is a diagonal variation of the classic: in addition to the usual row, column and 3x3 squares, both diagonals also follow the rule: each letter in the word POLYHEDRA is used exactly once.
Puzzle: POLYHEDRA
Each diagonal, row, column and 3x3 square contain the letters in the word or phrase exactly once

Solution first thing tomorrow morning. And later tomorrow, TWO puzzles for you: the usual 9x9 classic Word Sudoku, and an 8x8 Hidden Word Sudoku puzzle--using 2x4 internal rectangles. (2x4 rectangles are particularly easy, as you'll see!)

Thanks,

New Word Sudoku Puzzle for Friday, 6/6/2008

Remember I mentioned that I have a list of more than 10,000 nine-letter words? Well, as you probably have already surmised, not all those words are created equally. Today's Word Sudoku puzzle may be an example of that--but I'm using the word anyway, partly to demonstrate my point! Today's puzzle is based on the word--and I use that word 'word' perhaps somewhat loosely--OGREISHLY. I say that because I'm having trouble using "ogreishly" in a reasonably intelligent sentence...

Each row, column and 3x3 square contain the letters in the word or phrase exactly once

New Word Sudoku Puzzles for Tuesday, 6/3/2008

Here's the daily classic 9x9 Word Sudoku, QUAGMIRES:
QUAGMIRES
Each row, column and 3x3 square contain the letters in the word or phrase exactly once
And here's something a little more tricky: A 15x15 grid, with 3x5 internal rectangles; the circled letters have numbers that correspond to the "hidden quote" grid below the puzzle grid. As you figure out the letters, put them in their corresponding spot, and try to use your knowledge and intuition about the quote and its letter composition to help you with the Sudoku! You don't need to do that--the Word Sudoku puzzle is solvable with single-symbol logic ("very easy" in the Crossword Compiler definition). But feel free to use every bit of information you can!

AEIOU Sudoku Puzzle: SHUN BODY ART LIFE
Each row, column and 3x5 rectangle contain the letters in the word or phrase exactly once; some letters in the hidden word or phrase are circled and numbered,
corresponding to numbers in the answer rows

Oh, and by the way, the five vowels a, e, i, o and u are each contained in the quote--hence my name for the type of puzzle.

Solutions first thing tomorrow morning!

Sunday Challenge: New Word Sudoku Puzzle for Sunday, 6/1/2008

Presumably, we have more time to play Sundays, compared to weekdays. Or at least that's the presumption of our nation's daily newspapers, which publish bigger puzzles on Sunday. But I have trouble completing the 16x16 (4x4 internal squares) "Monster Sudoku" puzzle in my hometown newspaper, The Oregonian (Portland, OR). So *my* challenge for you, while still larger than the normal weekday 9x9 puzzle, is smaller than 16x16: It uses a 12x12 grid, with 3x4 internal rectangles...but need I point out that rectangles require slightly different thinking than squares?

12x12 Hidden Word Sudoku: OIL BY DANCERS
Each row, column and 3x4 rectangle contain the letters in the word or phrase exactly once; the hidden word or phrase is spelled UP the diagonal

Good luck!
