Solutions to Friday’s Word Sudoku Puzzles

Solutions to Friday’s Word Sudoku Puzzles

Yesterday’s Qudoku puzzle sets identified some difficult words—defining the fear of Friday the 13th and the fear of the number 13—and tied famous Italian opera composer, Gioachino Rossini, “The Italian Mozart,” into the day of bad luck: He died on that day.

Word Sudoku (Qudoku!) Puzzle for Friday, 2/13/2009

It‘s Friday the 13th! Avoid mirrors and ladders. Watch out for black cats. Don't spill the salt. And beware next month as well! (And November, too, if you want the complete list for 2009.)

The medical term meaning “fear of Friday the 13th” contains 13 distinct letters! The first Qudoku puzzle set today explores that term and the related term referring to fear of the number 13.

According to folklorists, the superstition about this day of bad luck appeared only about 300-400 years ago—relatively recently. Wikipedia reports that the earliest known documented reference in English occurs in a biography of “The Italian Mozart,” Gioachino Rossini, famous for composing more than three dozen operas, including the first Italian opera ever presented in the United States, The Barber of Seville. Today’s second Qudoku puzzle set references a quote from Rossini’s biography.

Solutions to Thursday’s Word Sudoku Puzzles

Yesterday’s two Qudoku puzzle sets, each using three 6x6 Word Sudoku puzzles, spelled out quotes from the 16th President of the U.S., Abraham Lincoln, and British naturalist Charles Darwin. Both men were born on the same day, 200 years ago yesterday.

Word Sudoku (Qudoku!) Puzzle for Thursday, 2/12/2009

Word Sudoku (Qudoku!) Puzzle for Thursday, 2/12/2009

Today is Abraham Lincoln’s 200th birthday. Many states and cities in the U.S. used to celebrate it in America as a semi-official holiday--or at least note it. But now, for the most part, it’s combined with George Washington’s Birthday (February 22) into President’s Day, celebrated on the third Monday in February, which falls in-between the two leader’s actual birthdays. Actually, the third Monday can fall on any date between the 15th (when the 1st is a Monday) and the 21st (when the 1st is a Tuesday).

In honor of Lincoln's birthday, I present you a Qudoku puzzle set based on three 6x6 Word Sudoku puzzles, spelling out a very famous Lincoln quote.

But we're not done yet! Today is also the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin. His theories on natural selection and evolution turned the scientific world upside down-and are still controversial today. But this Qudoku quote from Darwin isn't...
