New Word Sudoku (Qudoku!) Puzzles for Sunday, 11/1/2009

Early this morning, Daylight Saving Time ended for the year in the U.S.

Providing more daylight later in the day at the expense of early morning, DST was originally used in the U.S. to conserve energy—we used less incandescent lighting. But in modern times, power use doesn’t follow the same patterns. Controversy and confusion has thus followed in DST’s wake, especially as different federal laws changed the starting and ending times, while also allowing some states to ignore it altogether. And since the rest of the world doesn’t necessarily follow America’s lead on DST, figuring out what time it is in Sydney, Australia, when you’re on America’s West Coast requires a seasonally-adjusted calculation.

We mark the seasonal change by remembering time’s real nature: that a clock never stops ticking, no matter what time it is.
