New Word Sudoku Puzzle for Wednesday, 11/11/2009

World War I officially ended in June 1919, when the Treaty of Versailles was signed. But the fighting stopped when armistice went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918. Thus was born Armistice Day, remembering World War I veterans. After WWII and the Korean War, at the urging of veterans service organizations, Congress changed the name and the meaning in 1954: Nov. 11, Veterans Day, became the official day to honor American veterans of all wars.

Congress floated the holiday in the late 1960’s to make it always fall on a Monday. That worked just fine for other holidays, such as Columbus Day. But given the unique nature and meaning of Veterans Day—the original armistice taking effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month—Congress changed it back about ten years later. Now Veterans Day is always celebrated on 11/11, although if it falls on the weekend, the accompanying day off is taken on the Friday or the Monday!
