New Word Sudoku Puzzles for Sunday, 6/21/2009

Because today is both Father's Day and the Summer Solstice, I'm foregoing the usual 12x12 Hidden Word Sudoku puzzle in favor of a bunch of Qudoku puzzle sets offering quotes suiting these two occasions. Given the large number of Word Sudoku puzzles in this one blog entry, you can still consider this your Sunday Challenge!

Father's Day, the third Sunday in June, is a day of commemoration and celebration of fatherhood. It is a day to honor not only your father, but all men who have acted as father figure in your life.

The first Father's Day was observed on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington. Mrs. John B. Dodd first proposed the idea of Father's Day in 1909. Mrs. Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father, who had raised her and five other children by himself on a small farm near Spokane.

In honor of this day, and to guilt-trip my children who better call soon, I present two Qudoku puzzle sets, both demonstrating the respective author’s wry humor. The first quote comes from Bertrand Russell (1872-1970).

Today is also the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year, marking the beginning of summer in the northern hemisphere and the beginning of winter in the southern hemisphere. The Sun stays above the horizon for more than 12 hours on this day.

The Sun has been climbing higher and higher in the sky since the vernal equinox around March 21. http://www.windows.ucar.edu/tour/link=/the_universe/uts/summer.html&edu=elem has a great graphic and explanation.

Without the tilt of the earth's axis, we would have no seasons. The Sun's rays would be directly overhead of the equator all year long. Only a slight change would occur as the Earth makes its slightly elliptical orbit around the Sun.

In honor of summer (and a certain daughter’s birthday—I better call her!), I offer you three quotes, in Qudoku puzzle form.
