Solutions to Thursday's Word Sudoku Puzzles

Yesterday's "Qudoku" puzzles were large ones--15x15 grids. They were based on the letters in the anagrams CAMP VENTRILOQUY and FLAK BY OPEN SIGHT.

We'll complete our trip through the world of Qudoku--hopefully having left you hungering for more!?!--in a few hours, when I display some puzzles using grid size 16x16.

New Word Sudoku Puzzles for Thursday, 10/9/2008

We’re nearing the end of our discussion of oxymoronic Word Sudoku puzzles, what I call “Qudoku” puzzles. Yesterday I presented oxymorons you ‘discovered’ by solving 14x14 Word Sudoku puzzles. Today we’ll use 15x15 Word Sudoku puzzles to supply the necessary letters. That means 3x5 internal rectangles.

The only thing harder than these is the size 16x16 grid puzzle, which I’ve mentioned many times I find all but impossible to finish. If you’ve gotten pretty good at the Sunday Challenge (12x12 grid, with 3x4 internal rectangles), then you can take on the 15x15 grids with 3x5 rectangles using the same cross-hatching skills. But if the 12x12’s throw you, then 15x15’s will seem impossible!

We’ll conclude our tour through different sized Oxymoronic Qudoku puzzles tomorrow, using a 16x16 grid, and also comparing one 16x16-sized puzzle to two 9x9’s by adding or repeating a few letters—it means more puzzles, but each is smaller and easier. Divide and conquer is a main problem-solving strategy!

We’re still on about oxymoronic Word Sudoku puzzles, what I call “Qudoku” puzzles. Yesterday I presented oxymorons you ‘discovered’ by solving 10x10 Word Sudoku puzzles. Today we’ll use 14x14 Word Sudoku puzzles to supply the necessary letters. That means 2x7 internal rectangles. I find this size puzzle fairly difficult because there are so many letters and possibilities, it’s very easy to make a mistake.

We’re more or less halfway through our running theme of oxymoronic Word Sudoku puzzles, in a format I call “Qudoku” puzzles. Yesterday I presented some oxymorons you filled in by solving the Classic-sized 9x9 Word Sudoku puzzles. Today let’s explore some oxymorons that use 10x10 Word Sudoku puzzles to supply the necessary letters. That means 2x5 internal rectangles. I find this size puzzle grid almost always easy to solve pretty quickly.

We’re still on our theme of oxymoronic Word Sudoku puzzles, in a format I call “Qudoku” puzzles. Today, since it’s Sunday and you (hopefully) expect the Sunday Challenge, we’ll take on oxymorons that use 12x12 Word Sudoku puzzles to supply the necessary letters.

Here we only need one Word Sudoku puzzle to supply enough letters for the quote. But it’s a 12x12 grid with internal 3x4 rectangles, so it’s a bit more difficult than the classic-sized 9x9 grid with 3x3 internal squares.
